We fixate on daytime highs. The more dangerous story is the night that never drops: tropical nights — minima at or above 20 °C — are rising faster than the hottest days. Without a cool night, the body never gets to recover.

Vocabulary

What is a tropical night?

A tropical night is a night when the air temperature does not fall below 20 °C. It is a meteorological and public-health convention — not a lifestyle complaint. Below that threshold, most bodies can shed heat and enter restorative sleep. Above it, recovery frays.

A hot day is visible: shade, siesta, headlines. A tropical night is quieter. You still go to bed. The heart does not. On a hot night the cardiovascular system keeps working to dump heat; deep sleep needs roughly a 1 °C drop in core temperature. Miss the drop, miss the recovery.

Researchers also track heat-stress nights, where humidity and radiation make the same temperature feel worse. Those have become more common on tropical nights too.

High maximum. You can seek shade, stop work, enter a cooled building.

Tropical night

Minimum ≥ 20 °C. Opening the window fails when the street is as hot as the room.

The hottest nights warm faster

Emerton et al. (Nature Climate Change, 2026): the ten warmest nights of each year have warmed at about 0.32 °C per decade globally — faster than the ten warmest days at 0.27 °C.

The greenhouse effect does not sleep

Extra greenhouse gases keep working after sunset. Nights lose less heat to space when the atmosphere holds more energy.

Cities bank the day’s heat

Concrete and asphalt store daytime heat and release it after dark. Dense neighbourhoods cool slower than open country.

Humidity makes it worse

About 1 in 10 tropical nights now hit heat-stress conditions, versus roughly 1 in 30 in the 1970s.

What still works

Adaptation is thinner at night

By day you can move. By night you are mostly stuck with the building you sleep in.

Day options

Shade, reduce activity, cool public spaces, pause outdoor work. Windows and fans help when outdoor air is cooler than indoor.

Night problem

When outside is as hot as inside, opening the window no longer helps. Air conditioning works but costs money, can heat neighbouring units, and much of Europe’s housing — especially in the north — was designed to keep heat in.

Air conditioning

IEA: roughly 130 million AC units in the EU (2023), projected toward about 275 million by 2050. Cooling without cutting emissions still loads the grid and the climate.

Passive measures that help many people

External shutters, daytime shading, cool roofs, trees, one cool bedroom, hydration, checking on older neighbours. Cutting emissions remains the root; these bridge the gap.

Local stake

Bucharest is already on the chart

FT city figures place Bucharest among European capitals where tropical nights have surged — on the order of about 30 a year recently, against a much thinner 1970s baseline. This is not only a Mediterranean story.

Romanian cities combine summer heat islands, mixed housing (blocks that bake, attics, limited night ventilation), uneven access to cooling, and an ageing population — the same risk stack as Madrid or Milan, at a different latitude.

Watch night minima in heat warnings, not only afternoon peaks. If the forecast never falls below 20 °C, plan recovery as seriously as you plan the day.
